Persian ironwood
Parrotia subaequalis is a slow growing upright deciduous tree with slender branches of ovate leaves opening dark red purple margined in spring. Later in the season leaves turn scarlet shades giving good autumn colour before falling. The smooth bark peels with age. Tiny spider like red flowers in late winter and early spring before the leaves open. Can be planted in full sun or part shade.
Eventual height up to 8 metres with a spread of up to 3 metres
